We demonstrate that data processing can be used to enhance the overall quality of the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) science data and/or reduce costs without imposing significant contraints on the design of the NGST, the detectors or the computer compared with the baseline design.

We present an algorithm to sift through multiple samples of an image and find and reject cosmic ray events and other glitches. We compare the quality of science data generated by this method to that of images generated by similar methods. We also compare the requirements of the various methods in terms of computing requirements, A-to-D converter, bus speed and data downlink capability. We then compare these requirements with the projected capabilities of the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) and the suitability of these algorithms for use on the NGST.

This study is funded by a grant through the Remote Exploration and Experimentation project at JPL, Dr. Robert Ferrarro, project director.
