We report preliminary findings from a 50ks observation of the rich young star cluster around the Orion Trapezium obtained with the ACIS imaging array on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Hundreds of stellar sources are detected associated with pre-main sequence stars of all masses. In the central arcminute, almost all of known low-mass cluster members are detected. The image has an order of magnitude better sensitivity than that previously achieved with ROSAT. The relationships between X-ray emission and stellar properties (luminosity, age, mass, rotation, circumstellar disk) will be discussed. Stellar variability, emission from embedded stars, and the possibility of diffuse emission are also discussed.

This work is supported by NASA grant NAS8-38252 (Garmire, PI).
