We present color-magnitude diagrams for a number of open and globular cluster in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) filters.
The SDSS has been obtaining engineering and commissioning imaging data for over a year, and the survey is expected to begin in earnest in early 2000. The SDSS imaging camera utilizes a five-band (u'g'r'i'z') photometric system which will rapidly generate more photometric data than has been obtained in the entire history of astronomy.
In order to exploit the full capabilities of the SDSS data set, it is essential that we tie the SDSS photometric system to physical properties of observed stellar populations. To first order, this can be done by using transformation equations to convert UBVRI stellar data into the SDSS system. The color-magnitude diagrams presented are based on observations made with the 0.9m Schmidt at CTIO and the 0.5m SDSS photometric telescope. We use them to study age and metallicity effects within the SDSS system. This will both facilitate the recalibration of existing models of stellar systems and lead to a better understanding of the u'g'r'i'z' system as a whole.
