[4.04] Photometry of the Outer Halo of M31

P.R. Durrell (UBC), W.E. Harris (McMaster), C.J. Pritchet (UVic), T. Davidge (HIA)

We are undertaking a wide-field photometric study of the stars in the outer halo of M31 and are presenting preliminary results using reductions from our first field, located ~1.5\circ from the M31 center, along the minor axis (deprojected radius of 20 kpc). Based on the VI color-magnitude diagram, the halo stars in this field have a mean metallicity ([Fe/H]~-1 to -0.5) similar to that found for halo stars at smaller galactocentric r, although more metal-poor stars are clearly present. The stellar density of the M31 halo continues to fall steeply, as seen by Pritchet and van den Bergh (1994) for fields interior to ours. We will also present a distance to M31 based on the magnitude of the brightest red giants in this field.
