We present preliminary images from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey. The Southern Galactic Plane Survey is a project to map the \lambda21-cm continuum and HI spectral line of the fourth quadrant of the Milky Way. The survey will consist of a 2212 pointing Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) mosaic covering 210 square degrees (-1\circ \leq b \leq +1\circ and 253\circ \leq l \leq 358 \circ). We are also obtaining single dish data with the Parkes multibeam system to provide information on the large spatial scales. The combination of the two datasets will allow us to analyze HI structures ranging in angular size from 1\prime to several degrees. In addition, we have expandqed the Parkes coverage to ±10\circ in latitude to trace large scale structures which extend out of the plane.
The sensitivity of the survey will be ~0~{\rm mJy~Bm-1} or 2.5K rms in the line with channels of 3.9 kHz (0.82~{\rm km~s-1}). In the continuum we will cover 128 MHz in all four Stokes parameters with rms noise of ~250~{\rm \mu Jy}. The survey will result in an atlas which is more than an order of magnitude improvement in both spatial resolution and sensitivity over previous HI surveys of the southern Milky Way.
