[51.02] The OSU Spiral Survey: A z=0 Calibrator for Galaxy Evolution Studies

The Ohio State University Bright Spiral Galaxy Survey is a photometric imaging database of BVRJHK images of a complete sample of ~200 spirals with B \leq 12. As such, it provides a zero-redshift calibration set for multicolor studies of galaxies at high redshift. It is particularly important for comparisons with galaxy samples expected from SIRFT and NGST.

For SIRTF, the IRAC bandpasses will be 3.6\mum, 4.5\mum, 5.8\mum, and 8.0\mum. For these bands, the OSU Survey limiting bandpasses map onto redshift as follows: B-band: 7 < z < 17; K-band: 0.6 < z < 2.6.

If we take the standard IJHKL' NGST near-IR bandpasses, the OSU Survey B-band data map onto the following redshifts: I-band, z=1; J-band, z=1.8; H-band, z=2.6; K-band, z=4; L'-band, z=6.7. An expected 5\mum NGST band would probe the restframe R-band at z \approx 6.

As examples, we present images of two OSU Survey galaxies, NGC 1187 (an SBc galaxy) and NGC 1302 (an SB0/a galaxy). We show the results of redshifting the Survey H-band images into the IRAC 4.5\mum bandpass (z \approx 1.8), the V-band images into the NGST K-band (z \approx 3), and the R-band images into an expect NGST 5\mum bandpass (z \approx 6). This last experiment is of particular interest, as current ideas of galaxy evolution favor an epoch of strong star formation, leading to reionization in the range 5 < z < 10.

The Survey data have been rebinned to account for the expected angular resolution of IRAC/SIRTF (~2.''3) and NGST (~0.''07 at K, and ~0.''2 at 5\mum), respectively.
