[38.02] Strong-Field Gravity and X-ray Binaries

P. Kaaret, S. Corbel (Harvard-Smithsonian CfA), S. Piraino, A. Santangelo (IFCAI/CNR, Palermo)

We report on recent x-ray observations of the neutron-star low-mass x-ray binary 4U1728-23 made with RXTE and BeppoSAX. During the observations, the source was at a very high mass accretion rate. We describe the detection of kilohertz quasiperiodic oscillations and of Fe-line emission and discuss the implication of these results for understanding the accretion flow in the strong gravitational field near the neutron star.
