[50.16] Radial Velocities of Narrow-Line Region Gas of Markarian 3

J.R. Ruiz (CUA/IACS), D.M. Crenshaw, S.B. Kraemer (CUA/GSFC)

We present preliminary measurements of radial velocities for narrow-line region (NLR) gas in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Markarian 3. The measurements were obtained from a Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) slitless spectrum taken in January 2000. The radial velocity results are shown in the form of plots, 2D velocity maps, and color maps.

The STIS observations were compared with archival Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC 2) and Faint Object Camera (FOC) [O III] images of Mrk 3 in order to determine the offsets of the various knots of NLR gas in the dispersion direction, and in turn, the radial velocities from those offsets.

The measurements are part of a larger campaign to measure radial velocities in 9 other Seyfert galaxies, and compare the results with models of biconical and disk geometries at various inclination angles.
