[29.10] Counter-rotating Molecular Gas in the Circumnuclear Region of the Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 3351

We present sensitive, new ~2" (100 pc) interferometric CO (J = 1 -> 0) observations of the strongly barred SBb(r) galaxy, NGC 3351. NGC 3351 contains twin gas concentrations -- associated with an Inner Linblad resonance and attributed to the piling up of bar-driven gas -- which have been discussed in previous work. Aside from the nearly circular motion of the molecular gas containing the twin peaks, new maps show a distinct kinematic component which is difficult to explain by normal gas dynamics in bars -- i.e., as the result of some shock from inflowing gas. Appearing at a slightly greater radius but overlapping on the sky with the "twin peaks," the elements likely represent a counter-rotating, accretion event, in a plane different than that of the "twin peaks."
