[3.07] A NIR Sequence of Late-M, L and T-dwarfs with CorMASS

We present a sequence of low-resolution (R 300) near-infrared (NIR) spectra of late-M, L and T-dwarfs observed with the recently commissioned Cornell Massachusetts Slit Spectrograph (CorMASS) on the Palomar 60-inch telescope. NIR low resolution spectral features available for constructing a classification scheme are discussed along with a comparison with the red-optical classification scheme of Kirkpatrick et al. We also present zJHK spectra of 2MASSI J0559191-140448, CorMASS' first confirmed T-dwarf. Its brightness of Ks = 13.61, 0.4 magnitudes brighter than Gl 229B, will enable significant multi-wavelength study. Late L-dwarf spectral features observed in this object such as FeH and K I infer its temperature is close to the L/T transition. CorMASS was designed with the primary scientific purpose of spectrally confirming and classifying candidate low-mass stellar and sub-stellar objects identified by the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS). CorMASS is a prism cross-dispersed spectrograph with wavelength coverage between 0.75 - 2.5 microns.
