[45.05] Cataclysmic Variable Superhumps: A Comparison of Theory, Observations, and Numerical Simulations

M.M. Montgomery, M.A. Wood (Florida Institute of Technology), J.C. Simpson (Computer Sciences Raytheon)

We compare analytical expressions of precession rates due to apsidal (positive) superhumps in close binary systems with numerical disk simulation results and observed values. In the analytical expressions, we include both the dynamical model for the precession of the disk and effects due to pressure forces which have been therorized to provide a retrograde impact on the prograde disk precession. We find good correlation between the analytical expressions for precession and the numerical results from well-developed, positive superhumping disks. We also find our values of numerical precession results to be consistent with observed values for the three close binary systems which have accurately known mass ratios. We then extend our results to establish our best estimates of other non-eclipsing, positive superhumping systems.
