[59.01] Spatially-Resolved Spectroscopy of the Crab Nebula and Pulsar using Chandra

G.E. Allen, H. Marshall, C.R. Canizares (MIT)

We present an analysis of Chandra data of the Crab pulsar and nebula. Results of the spatial variation of the X-ray spectrum across the nebula will be presented. The spectral results include an analysis of the ``pile-up'' of the detected X-ray photons, which has a significant effect on the shape of the detected X-ray spectra of the pulsar and nebula. Single power-law fits to the dispersed and undispersed spectra of the pulsar yield a photon index of about 1.8 and fits to spatially-separate regions of the nebula yield indices between about two and three. This work is supported in part by contract SAO SV1-61010.
