[44.02] On young stars and dust in AFGL437: NICMOS/HST imaging of a young bipolar outflow source

We present near infrared broad band and polarimetric images of the young stellar cluster AFGL437 obtained with the NICMOS instrument aboard HST. Our high resolution images allow us to identify the illuminator of the scattered light in the region and reveal a well collimated bipolar reflection nebula centered on the source. The polarization of light in the bipolar lobes is as high as 80% at 2 \mu m. Various envelope geometries, based on theoretical cloud collapse simulations, are used to make scattered light models to interpret the observations. Constraints are also placed on the composition and size distribution of the dust grains in the protostellar envelope.
