[17.02] Effects of Strong Magnetic Fields on Neutron Star Structure

C. Y. Cardall, M. Prakash, J. M. Lattimer (SUNY at Stony Brook)

We study static neutron stars with poloidal magnetic fields, employing two families of electric current distribution permitted by the requirement of stationarity, and various dense nuclear matter equations of state. Sequences of constant baryon number are presented in order to elucidate the effects of magnetic fields on neutron star structure. We obtain configurations of higher mass than have been reported previously, as well as toroidal configurations.
