[9.02] Report on the SHINE 2000 Workshop

N. Crooker (Boston University)

The SHINE 2000 Workshop is being held just previous to and in conjunction with this year's SPD meeting. The workshop program features working groups devoted to two key space weather issues: 1) The CME Working Group (led by J Gurman and J Klimchuk) focuses upon two overarching questions: Are there physically distinct classes of CMEs? How can observations be better used to test the theoretical models? The discussion includes comparison of the physical attributes and observational signatures of CME models involving various magnetic configurations. 2) The Interplanetary Propagation Working Group (led by P Riley and T Zurbuchen) examines the link between detectable solar phenomena and interplanetary CME manifestations and whether and how they depend upon solar cycle phase. Specifically, this group considers what has led to the relatively low level of activity at Earth over the past year, given the apparent CME inputs at the Sun. The current behavior is compared to solar/terrestrial linkages during the rising phases of solar cycles 22 and 23, and potential contributory factors are evaluated. The findings of the Working Groups and the plenary deliberations are summarized.
