[41.02] A Fluorescence Model for the Rotational Structures of the B-X System of S2

S.J. Kim (Kyunghee U.)

We have constructed a line-by-line fluorescence model for the ro-vibrational emission lines of the B-X system of S2. The detailed structures of the bands are clearly resolved in the high-resolution Echelle spectra of comet Hyakutake (C/1996 B2) (A'Hearn, et al. BAAS, 31, 1124). The construction of the ro-vibrational band model of the S2 (B-X) system is a challenge because: 1) the bands are significantly extended from 2800 to 6900 A; 2) accurate line positions measured in laboratories are only partially known in literature; 3) rotational molecular constants are not accurately known for many important transitions; 4) quantitative laboratory measurements of line intensities are not available in literature; and 5) the number of rotational transitions involved in the fluorescence calculations should be at least 10,000. We used line positions available in literature and adopted the line strength formulae of Tatum and Watson (1971, Can. J. Phys. 49, 2693). We compared the model intensities to laboratory spectra available on hardcopies in literature. We will present discussions on the fluorescence process of the S2 bands considering the short lifetime of S2.
