[28.04] A Closeup Look at Io's Volcanos with Galileo PPR

J.R. Spencer, J.E. Rathbun (Lowell Obs.), L.D. Travis (NASA-GISS), L.K. Tamppari, L. Barnard, T.Z. Martin (JPL)

Galileo's photopolarimeter-radiometer (PPR) instrument mapped Io's thermal emission during the I24, I25, and I27 flybys with a spatial resolution of 2.2 to 300 kilometers. Mapping of Loki in I24 shows uniform temperatures near 250 K for most of Loki Patera and high temperatures in the southwest corner, probably resulting from an eruption that began 1 month before the observation. This eruption appeared to have resurfaced most of the Patera before PPR's I27 observations, which showed generally increased temperatures but no sign of the I24 temperature peak in the SW corner of the Patera. Mapped portions of Pele's caldera floor have a surprisingly low temperature of 160 K, perhaps due to pyroclastic cover, whereas cooling flows at Pillan and Zamama have temperatures of up to 200 K. Global maps of nighttime temperatures on I24 and I27 provide a new means for estimating global heat flow, giving values consistent with earlier estimates.
