[59.01] TES Mapping Data: Recession of the Mars Polar Caps

T. N. Titus, H. H. Kieffer (USGS), P. R. Christensen (Arizona State University)

In a recent paper, Kieffer et al. (2000) quantified the recession of the south polar cap using the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) pre-mapping data. We apply that same technique to MGS TES mapping data for both the south [Figure 1] and north polar caps. Figure 1 shows the recession of the southern cap as a function of season (Ls). Estimates of the net energy balance will be presented for both Martian polar caps. In addition to the polar caps recession rates, we use 3km TES data to examine the thermal properties of both perennial caps.
