SMC X-1 is a short period (0.71 s) X-ray pulsar accreting from a B0 supergiant companion. It is unusual in that it has exhibited one probable Type II X-ray burst, possibly putting it in a class with GRO J1744-28 (`` The Bursting Pulsar''). It has also shown smooth spinup since its discovery, despite varying in luminosity from 1037 to 1039 erg/s. It is also eclipsing and and orbital period derivative has been measured.

We present timing observations of SMC X-1 made with the USA Experiment on ARGOS made between 1999 October and 2000 February (covering more than two of the 60-day disk precession periods), combined with archival data from RXTE. We study the torque variations observed and examine the power density spectrum in the range 1 to 15 keV.

Basic research in X-ray Astronomy at the Naval Research Laboratory is supported by NRL/ONR. Work on USA at SLAC is supported by Department of Energy contract DE-AC03-76SF00515.
