G. Kanbach (MPE), MEGA Collaboration
The MEGA (Medium Energy Gamma-ray Astronomy) mission has recently been proposed to the German government as a candidate for a small satellite mission. MEGA will improve the sensitivity at medium \gamma-ray enerrgies (~0.5--50 MeV) by at least an order of magnitude with respect to current and planned instruments. Its large field of view will be especially important for the discovery of serendipitous transient sources and for conducting all-sky surveys. MEGA records and images \gamma-ray events by completely tracking Compton and pair creation interactions using advanced detector technologies. Multiple methods will be used to suppress instrumental and external sources of background. The proposed instrument concept will be reviewed and the latest results from the prototype development will be presented.
