[13.05] Chandra observation of Abell 2256

M. Sun, S.S. Murray, M. Markevitch (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics)

We report on Chandra ACIS-I and ACIS-S observations of the rich cluster of galaxies A2256. The X-ray images of both observations are given and for the fist time, the detailed temperature distribution of the central region is mapped. There are two peaks in the surface brightness distribution. The falling peak is cooler than the main peak, and the cool region extends at least 5 arcminutes west. Spectroscopy investigations of the iron K-alpha line show positional dependence and the cooler peak seems to have more iron that the main peak. The nature of the cooling falling peak, and the evolution of the cluster are also discussed.
