[30.01] The afterglows of Gamma-Ray Bursts

The study of the afterglow emission has become a very fruitful method of investigation of the GRB phenomenon. The distance-scale determination has been the most evident result of a series of achievements, like the explanation of the temporal and and multi-v spectral behavior of the afterglow emission by the fireball scenario. Big issues that are now to be tackled are the nature of the progenitor and the central engine, the relationship between the GRB, its environment and the early Universe. In this talk I will review the recent observational picture, with some emphasis on the results obtained in X-rays , and discuss the implications on theory and on the nature of progenitors.
