High Resolution X-ray data analysis for Chandra and XMM
This workshop will focus on how to get a flux-calibrated spectrum and
what instrumental and calibration effects and choices users should be
aware of in the final spectrum. Trade-offs, known calibration issues,
and other issues will be discussed. In addition, a short talk at the
end will introduce some of the new high-resolution spectral analysis
models and tools that are available. This workshop features talks
from scientists directly involved in the calibration of the
instruments and in creating the latest atomic models.
- Specific talks will include:
- Chandra HETG data issues (Herman Marshall)
- Chandra LETG data issues (Jeremy Drake)
- XMM/Newton RGS data issues (Andrew Rassmussen)
- Atomic models for high-resolution X-ray data (Randall Smith)
- Some of the issues that will be discussed include:
- -- Instrumental line shape response
- -- Wavelength accuracy
- -- Background issues
- -- Order sorting issues
- -- Comparing/summing plus and minus orders
- -- Effect of changing extraction region on spectra
- -- Identifying and fitting isolated and blended emission lines in data
- -- Finding and applying relevent atomic data and references
