[41.19] Li-Rich Giants in Globular Clusters

Observations of over 700 giants in more than a dozen globular clusters have revealed about a dozen stars with detectable lithium resonance lines. The presence of lithium in these red giants is surprising because of convective dilution. Lithium-rich giants have been found in M3, M5, M71, and M92. While some occur on the upper giant branch, most are found at lower luminosities, near or just above the luminosity function bump. Approximately one in fifty giants surveyed shows detectable lithium. The globular cluster lithium-rich giants have been found through a survey carried out with the the Hydra Multi-object Spectrograph on the 3.5-m WIYN Telescope. The spectra are of moderate resolution (R=14,000) with S/N ratios from about 20 to over 100, depending on the magnitudes of the stars.
