[108.09] A Probable Blazar Identification for 3EG J2006-2321

We present a multiwavelength analysis of the variable EGRET source 3EG J2006-2321 (l=18.8, b=-26.3). The most likely radio counterpart is found to be the flat-spectrum source PMN J2005-2310. Optical observations indicate a V=19.3 object with z=0.833 at the location of the radio source. Taken together, the broad-band spectrum and short-term variability indicate that 3EG J2006-2321 is probably a blazar. If it is a blazar associated with PMN J2005-2310, it is unusual for its low flux at 5 GHz (S5=260 mJy) as compared with other EGRET-detected blazars with similar (> 10-6 photons cm-2 s-1) peak gamma-ray flux. All other candidate radio sources in the EGRET error circle have significantly lower values of S5 and are more widely separated from the gamma-ray centroid than PMN J2005-2310. If the source is not a blazar, it may represent a new class of gamma-ray source.
