[46.08] Variable stars in the Fornax dwarf galaxy

D. Bersier (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics)

I present the results of a search for variable stars in the Fornax dwarf galaxy. An area of approximately half a square degree has been surveyed and more than 30 epochs have been acquired in the VI passbands. Most variables are RR Lyrae; a few anomalous Cepheids and long period variables are also found. I show a few example light curves and discuss basic properties of these variables. I also determine a distance to this galaxy using the tip of the red giant branch and red clump stars. The two indicators give results in excellent agreement.
