[111.02] Merger-Driven Evolution of Galactic Nuclei: Observations of the Toomre Sequence

S. Laine, R.P. van der Marel, T. Böker (STScI), C. Mihos (CWRU), J.E. Hibbard (NRAO), A.I. Zabludoff (U. Arizona)

We present first results from an HST WFPC2 imaging program to investigate the structural and star forming properties in the nuclear regions of the Toomre sequence of merging galaxies. We present F555W (V-band), F814W (I-band), H\alpha and color index and color composite images of the nuclei. We discuss the connection between the nuclear morhology and the structure of the ionized gas, and the implications on the evolution of the nuclei.

Support for this work was provided by NASA through grant number GO-08669.01-A, awarded by STScI which is operated by AURA, Inc., under NASA contract NAS5-26555.
