[85.01] The Recovery of the Old Nova RS Car (1895)

B. Alford (Hendrix College & U of Wyoming), A. Bianchini (U of Padova Italy & U of Wyoming), R. Canterna (U of Wyoming), M. Della Valle (Astronomical Observatory di Arcetri, Florence Italy)

Low resolution spectra at ESO La Silla identify the old nova RS Car (1895) as a ~18 mag star located 7 arcsec southwest from its previous published position. This suggests a much brighter absolute visual magnitude for the old nova, M ~ 5.4. The spectra reveal a continuum energy distribution typical of optically thick accretion discs and a high excitation gas state. The possible detection of the AlO emission band (4843 Angstroms) is discussed.
