[30.03] Chandra Observations of Three Elliptical Galaxies

M. Loewenstein, R. F. Mushotzky, L. Angelini, B. A. Brown, K. A. Arnaud (NASA/GSFC)

We present results of Chandra ACIS observations of three elliptical galaxies, NGC 1399, NGC 4472, and NGC 4636. We report upper limits to the emission associated with the dynamically inferred supermassive black holes and derive the physical conditions of the hot interstellar media in the nuclei, thus constraining the nature of the central accretion flow. We also investigate the gravitational potential at the dark/luminous matter transition. Finally, we discuss the discrete source populations, including measurements of the luminosity functions, spatial distributions, and spectral properties.
