Observatories evoke an image of buildings in remote areas inhabited only by astronomers who are seeking to view distant objects. Observational astronomy in an urban area has long been a goal of researchers and educators. With the advent of computers, the Internet and CCD cameras, serious observational astronomy has become a possibility in areas with moderate light pollution. Computers have given many researchers the ability to convert their observatories to remote-control instruments. We will describe the implementation of such a remote-control observatory as a solution for a low cost educational and research facility at a smaller institution in an urban area.
