[74.05] A Chandra Observation of M51: Nucleus, Nuclear Outflows, and X-ray Source Populations

Y. Terashima (NASA/GSFC), A.S. Wilson, D.A. Smith, A.J. Young (Univ of Maryland)

We report on X-ray imaging and spectroscopy of M51, including both the main spiral galaxy (NGC 5194) and its companion (NGC 5195). A Chandra ACIS-S image of NGC 5194 shows various emission components: (1) the Compton-thick Seyfert 2 nucleus, (2) extended emission from hot gas associated with the extranuclear clouds seen in radio continuum and optical line emission, and which are apparently powered by bi-polar outflow from the nucleus, (3) numerous point sources associated with the galaxy, and (4) diffuse emission distributed over the galaxy. We will present a spectral analysis of these components. Our results for the companion galaxy will also be discussed.
