[38.06] The Chimney in the Edge-on Spiral NGC 55

E. M. Schlegel (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics)

The edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 55 contains a large H I structure perpendicular to the plane of the galaxy. The ROSAT PSPC data, when overlaid onto the H I data, shows an alignment between an X-ray plume and the H I structure defining a chimney. We analyze the data from that viewpoint.
