[83.21] Spectral Evolution of Black Hole Binaries

R. A. Remillard, M. Muno, E. H. Morgan (M.I.T.)

We examine the X-ray spectral evolution of accreting black holes using the extensive data archives of RXTE. The target selection emphasizes sources with multiple maxima or recurrent outbursts. We track the departures from a semi-empirical, multi-temperature disk model with thermal Comptonization. The observed departures from this model are compared to times of QPO detections (of various types, by frequenecy) and also to times of radio activity. We speculate on the origin of the nonthermal spectral branch.
