[33.10] Near and Mid-Infrared Colors of Galactic Plane Objects: Comparing MSX and 2MASS

S.J. Carey (Boston College), M.P. Egan, S.D. Price (AFRL)

We have associated Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) near-infrared observations with the Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) mid-infrared sources extracted from the MSX Galactic Plane Survey. The mid-infrared photometry combined with the near-infrared colors is a powerful discriminent to identify evolved stars and young stellar objects. The use of the mid-infrared data from MSX permits study of very embedded objects where the extinction at 2 microns is significant. We show the loci of various object types in J, H, K, 8.3, 12.1, 14.7 and 21.3 micron color space as a function of Galactic longitude.
