[73.02] Do Fossil Radio Lobes Surround Active Galaxies?

We have observed fields containing seven Pearson-Readhead sources and the rich galaxy cluster surrounding 3C295 with the VLA at 74 MHz to search for extended, steep spectrum emission from early epochs of nonthermal activity. Three of our Pearson-Readhead sources and the 3C295 cluster were also observed at 327 MHz. We find no evidence for large fossil radio lobes associated with any of these currently active galaxies, or with currently inactive galaxies in the 3C295 cluster. We did discover several point sources in our VLA fields that appear to have very steep radio spectra; investigation of these sources is continuing.
