[85.03] Nuclear bars and nuclear spirals in nearby normal and active galaxies

P. Martini, J.S. Mulchaey (OCIW), R.W. Pogge (Ohio State), M.W. Regan (STScI)

Hubble Space Telescope observations of the circumnuclear regions of nearby normal and active galaxies have revealed a wealth of small-scale structure, particularly nuclear bars and nuclear spirals. We present high angular-resolution WFPC2 and NICMOS images of a large sample of nearby active and inactive galaxies. These images permit us to quantify the frequency of nuclear bars and nuclear spiral structure in these galaxies as a function of galaxy type and AGN activity. We will discuss the implications for the AGN fueling process.
