[9.04] Ultraviolet Extinction Curves in the Magellanic Clouds

K. Gordon (Univ. of Arizona), G. Clayton (Lousisiana State. Univ.), K. Misselt (NASA/Goddard), M. Wolff (Space Sci. Inst.)

We will present an analysis of dust properties in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC & SMC) based on ultraviolet extinction curves. These curves were derived from IUE data for 19 sightlines in the LMC (Misselt, Clayton, & Gordon 1999, ApJ, 515, 128) and 4 sightlines in the SMC (Gordon & Clayton 1998, ApJ, 500, 816). In addition, we will present one new curve for the SMC based on HST/STIS data. For all the extinction curves, we have derived the RV values using 2MASS and DENIS near-infrared photometry combined with previous optical photometry. We will investigate how well the RV dependent relationship for dust extinction curves derived for the Milky Way dust (Cardelli, Clayton, & Mathis 1989, ApJ, 345, 245) reproduces the measured ultraviolet LMC and SMC extinction curves.
