[50.01] In-situ measurement of the interplanetary dust charge

S. Kempf, R. Srama, E. Grün (MPI-K, Germany), V. Tschernjavski (DLR, Germany), S. Auer (Basye, USA)

Dust particles in interplanetary space are expected to charge up to about +2 \ldots +5V by the solar UV radiation. The dust charge is an important property of dust grains since it affects the particle dynamics. Furthermore, from the dust charge conclusions can be drawn about the particle morphology as well as about the particle mass. In this talk we report about the first successful in-situ measurement of the dust charge by the Cosmic Dust Analyser (CDA) on the Cassini spacecraft.
