[11.02] Effects of Changing the Density Stratification in Magneto-Convection

M. Evonuk, G. A. Glatzmaier (University of California, Santa Cruz)

A comparison of constant density, and density stratified 2-D fluids will be provided using an anelastic magnetohydrodynamic code with the option for rotation. The density stratification will be incrementally increased while the other parameters, including the background magnetic field strength, viscosity, and diffusivity, remain constant. The comparisons will address the validity of using the Boussinesq approximation, constant density, in environments that experience a large vertical change in density.
