[3.05] Global maps of preliminary composition retrievals from the Cassini/CIRS Jupiter Encounter

P. Parrish, P.G.J. Irwin, T. Fouchet, S.B. Calcutt, F.W. Taylor, P.L. Read (Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics, Oxford University), CIRS Team

On December 30th 2000, the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft reached the perijove milestone in its continuing journey to the Saturnian system. For the fourteen days following closest approach, Jupiter was mapped globally on four separate occassions by the Composite Interferometer Spectrometer (CIRS) from 10-1400 cm-1 (1000-7 \mum) at a resolution of 3.0 cm-1.

The approximately 25,000 spectra returned have been grouped into bins of 5\degr\ latitude by 10\degr\ longitude and input into the Oxford group's optimal estimation retrieval model to retrieve global maps of temperature, composition and cloud. The preliminary analysis of the retrieved maps (NH3, PH3 and Haze), including the indication of increased levels of PH3 above the Great Red Spot, will be presented.
