[26.05] The Use of Spectral Evolution for Determining Global Properties in Gamma-Ray Bursts

We examine how the spectral evolution, in particular the evolution of Epeak (maximum of the \nuF\nu spectra) in conjunction with light curve and energy flux model parameters can be used to determine global properties of gamma-ray bursts. This includes using the Epeak decay constant \Phio combined with distance as a better standard candle then the Luminosity-soft lag relation previously proposed. We also look at how the decay of the Epeak can be used to explain the spectral lags that are seen in GRBs. Finally we look at how \Phio and light curve model parameters can be used to start to discriminate between various emission mechanisms. We review preliminary results and discuss the difficulties in obtaining \Phio in GRBs with high time variability. We also discuss alternative methods of determining \Phio that can be used in future work.
