[89.04] VLA Observations of the Close Binary System SVS 13

We present high angular resolution Very Large Array continuum and line observations of the region near the Herbig-Haro 7-11 system. Our VLA continuum observations reveal that SVS 13 is a double source, with the two components separated by 0.3 arcsec (65 AU in projection). Our data suggest that the western component (VLA 4A) coincides with the optically visible star, while the eastern component (VLA 4B) coincides with a strong millimeter source. We propose that the two radio sources constitute a close binary system, in which one of the components (VLA 4B) is surrounded with a dusty envelope or disk, while the other (VLA 4A) is not. Our VLA water maser observations show that the maser spots are segregated in two velocity groups: a velocity group with LSR velocity similar to that of the ambient cloud, that is positionally associated with VLA 4A, and a blueshifted velocity group, that is positionally associated with VLA 4B. We also present sensitive VLA ammonia line observations of this region. This work has been partially supported by MCYT, MEC, DGAPA, and CONACyT.
