[136.04] Estimating the distance to V4334 Sgr using the extinction method

Multi-color UBV broadband observations of fields surrounding Planetary Nebulae (PNe) have been successfully used in the past in combination with de-reddening methods to estimate the distances of these objects. A precise distance is the key to deriving in absolute terms the properties of the PNe and their central stars (CSs). The biggest advantage of the interstellar extinction method is that it gives distances without making any assumptions about the PN itself.

We have applied several variants of the de-reddening method, using different sets of colors, to a set of UBVRI images of V4334 Sgr which were obtained in April 2001 using the FORS2 instrument on the VLT Kueyen. Using these methods, we were able to assign MK stellar types to stars surrounding the target PN. Here, we compare these derived stellar types with those derived spectroscopically using spectra obtained by VLT/FORS2 multi-object spectroscopy. We conclude by reporting a new distance estimate to V4334 Sgr.
