[52.03] The Stellar Kinematic Fields of NGC 2768 and NGC 4472

T. Lester, T. Statler, C. Myers (Ohio Univ.)

We present results from long slit stellar kinematic observations of NGC 2768 and NGC 4472. Optical spectra near the Mg b triplet were obtained along three position angles for each galaxy using the RC Spectrograph on the Mayall 4m telescope at KPNO. We show profiles of mean velocity and dispersion, and higher moments of the line of sight velocity distribution, out to approximately 4 arcminutes (2.3 effective radii) in NGC 4472, and 2.5 arcminutes (2.0 effective radii) in NGC 2768. The data for NGC 4472 overlap in radius with published kinematics using planetary nebulae and globular clusters. Implications for the intrinsic shapes and mass distributions in these galaxies will be discussed.
