[143.01] Forbidden and Permitted at the Same Time: Oxygen Abundances in Metal-Poor Stars

J. Fulbright (DAO-HIA), J. A. Johnson (OCIW)

Recent measurements of the the oxygen abundance in metal-poor stars have shown a discrepancies between the abundances derived from the forbidden lines at 6300 Angstoms and the permitted lines at 7772 Angstroms. The difference between methods in [O/Fe] can be a factor of several for the most metal-poor stars.

Traditionally the two methods are applied to metal-poor stars of different evolutionary status. In order to create a sample of metal-poor stars with measuresments from both sets of lines, we have observed the [O I] lines of several dozen metal-poor stars with the very high resolution (R ~ 130,000) Gecko spectrograph on CFHT. We will present these data as well as lower resolution (R ~ 50,000) spectra that are in the process of being analyzed to discover the origin of the discrepancy.
