[50.01] Optical Properties of Radio Selected Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies

We present the optical spectra of 62 radio-selected narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). The objects were initially detected at 20 cm in the VLA FIRST Survey and were followed up optically as part of the First Bright Quasar Survey (FBQS). FIRST sources in the FBQS were selected to have stellar optical counterparts brighter than 17.8 mag on the POSS-I E (red) plate. The NLS1s represent ~ 10% of the AGN population in the FBQS; their redshifts range from z = 0.06 to z = 0.85. The objects have H\beta velocity widths of ~ 800--2200 km s-1 FWHM and [O III]/H\beta flux ratios ranging from 0.03 to 2, consistent with the properties of optically selected NLS1s. NLS1s are almost always found to be radio-quiet objects. However, in our sample a whopping ~ 40% are radio loud (R* > 10), and the remainder fall into the radio-intermediate range, 10 > R* > 1.
