Professional astronomers have many allies in our efforts to preserve the dark skies. Our efforts will be more successful if we are aware of these allies and of the information and resources available to help correct problem lighting.
Allies include organizations that reach audiences other than those traditionally reached by astronomers. The International Lighting Commission (CIE) and the Illumination Engineering Society of North America (IESNA), for example, include professionals whose expertise spans many disciplines concerned with lighting. These organizations issue publications outlining correct design practices for the lighting community.
The CIE, which develops basic standards and guidance in lighting, will hold its quadrennial meeting in San Diego in June/July 2003. The theme, "Light, Dark Skies, and Space," provides an excellent outreach opportunity as delegates from all over the world participate in this international forum for discussion and interchange. The USA last hosted this international meeting in 1967. Outreach to and collaboration with lighting professionals can improve the quality and credibility of our message.
This poster will list resources available to astronomers as we strive to preserve our nighttime environment by educating our communities about the benefits of quality outdoor lighting. Good lighting preserves our natural heritage of dark skies for future generations while improving visibility, promoting safety and security, and conserving energy.
