[124.01] HII Region Analysis of Dwarf Irregular Galaxies

S. Holmes (College of Charleston, SC), K. Olsen (NOAO/CTIO), P. Massey (Lowell Observatory), C. Smith (NOAO/CTIO)

Taken as part of the Local Group Survey project, there is one night of CTIO 4-m telescope, Mosaic wide-field CCD camera images taken in UBVRI and H\alpha, [SII], and [OIII] of three Local Group dwarf irregular galaxies: NGC 6822, WLM, and Phoenix. As a step towards understanding the mode of star formation in these galaxies, an automated method is used to derive a complete sample of HII regions in the three galaxies. This sample is used to compare the properties of the HII regions (through luminosity functions and distribution of morphologies) with those in past studies of the three galaxies as well as other Local Group galaxies.

This research is sponsored in part by the NSF Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory Research Experience for Undergraduates.
