[33.06] From CORALIE to HARPS, the way to the next generation extra-solar planet surveys by precise Doppler measurements

D. Queloz (Obs. de Geneve, Switzerland), M. Shao (JPL), M. Mayor (Obs. de Geneve, Switzerland)

Since we made the discovery of the first extra-solar planet orbiting a star by precise Doppler spectroscopy, many improvements have been made in the accuracy as well as in the size of ours surveys. I will give an overview of the status of the Geneva planet search surveys. I will present HARPS a new dedicated spectrograph for extra-solar planet searches . It will be installed in Chile in end 2003. This instrument will have the capability to detect telluric planets on short orbits. A discussion on the intrinsic limitations of planet searches by Doppler spectroscopy and on the links with the astrometry planet surveys to be carried out by SIM will be presented.
