[54.02] VLBA observations of the Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxy IRAS 17208-0014.

We present phase-referenced VLBI results on the radio continuum of, and the 21 cm HI absorption toward the Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxy (ULIRG) IRAS 17208-0014 (cz=12790 km s-1). The observations were carried out at 1362 MHz using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), including the phased Very Large Array (VLA) as an element.

The high-resolution radio continuum images reveal the nuclear starburst region of this galaxy, which has a linear extent of ~ 620 pc on the plane of the sky (assuming {H\circ =50} km s-1 Mpc-1), and a total flux density of ~ 30 mJy. The image is punctuated by a number of compact sources with flux densities between 0.4 and 2 mJy. The derived massive star formation rate is about 57 M{\odot} yr-1, and the expected supernova rate is 2 yr-1, using the empirical relations of Condon (1992).

A wide, but weak, HI absorption line is detected on the shortest VLA-VLBA baselines, with full width at half maximum of ~ 520 km s-1.
